The Holiday Grocery - It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year
This past week AIDS Vancouver hosted our 2012 Holiday Grocery, and as expected the day was a tremendous success. It's the kind of day you walk away from little tired, a bit sore, and with a lighter heart. Definitely satisfied with a lovely experience, shared by all.
At the heart of this is community. A sense that everyone has a place in it, a way to come together. To know that we are not alone. What we love about the Holiday Grocery is that everyone comes together and we embody this. Beyond words! Absolutely every day, but this day is an extra special one.
We handed out 772 bags of groceries to 694 clients and their families. Regular folks from all walks of life who have one distinct thing in common -- their lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS.
We have a lot of people to thank for helping us along this year, including our 70+ Volunteers who gave almost 300 hours of service and once again, made this possible. It takes an incredible amount of effort, and it's always inspiring to know that when we need the help, we’ve got a huge group of dedicated people who we can count on. That includes our staff as well, who step out of their usual roles at AV when able and help keep things running throughout the day. We all get involved.
Of course, you can't have a Holiday Grocery without Groceries. We've been very lucky in this regard, as we have the support of great organizations including the Greater Vancouver Foodbank, Van Whole Produce, Muscle Mlk, Wholesale Club, Diamond Delivery, Starbucks and Abbott. We want to be able to offer the best, most nutritious food for our clients, and we're getting closer to that goal with the help of these sponsors. If you get a chance please show your appreciation, whether that's in the form of using their services, buying their products or giving them a shout-out on social media.
Much the same, our Grocery Program couldn't exist without our donors. Financial support from both organizations and individuals makes up the bulk of our funding for the food purchases. It comes down to the generosity of our donor’s week in and week out. You make it possible, and we thank you for that.
The Holiday Grocery is just once a year, but our Grocery program is a year-round affair. We need continuous support to keep it going, growing and succeeding. If you'd like to keep up-to-date on how the program is doing, please touch base with us! Otherwise, check out some highlights from the day in the gallery below!
