Question:

First of all, I'd like to thank you for this amazing site! :)

I have a few questions I hope can be answered.

I had unprotected sex in January and had a PCR RNA test done at 2 weeks and was negative. I also had another incident in March (no sex but oral sex) and had a PCR RNA test done at 3 weeks and was negative.

1.) If I was infected the first time (even though the test came back negative) would it have shown up the second time I took the PCR RNA test in March?

2.) If I wasn't infected the first time and then took the test the second time in March three weeks after possible exposure and it was negative is this a good indicator that I'm not infected at all?

3.) Since both tests were negative are they likely to change when I take the antibody test in June (It makes 3 months)

I apologize for the questions if they don't make any sense.

Question:

Hi would having ulcerative colitis affect HIV test?? I had a negative HIV test at 3 and 6 months however i am worried after reading this comment made by a doctor on thebody.com

I posted the comment below:

Regarding ulcerative colitis, this autoimmune disease often requires immunosuppressive agents, such as corticosteroids and/or Imuran for control. Depending on the dose, strong immunosuppressive drugs may alter the body's immune responses, including its ability to make specific antibodies. This theoretically could give a false-negative (not false-positive) result. If you have been taking significant doses of Imuran, corticosteroids or other immunosuppressive drugs for your ulcerative colitis on a regular basis, I would suggest you get a DNA PCR rather than HIV-antibody test. DNA PCR measures a fragment of the actual viral particle rather than testing for the presence of anti-HIV antibodies (ELISA and Western Blot tests). The DNA PCR therefore does not rely on the body's immune response (production of anti-HIV antibodies) to determine if HIV is present or not.

Good luck.

Dr. Bob

As i tested negative on a antibody test at 3 and 6 months do i now need to take a dna pcr test??? If i am taking these meds can they cause a false negative by 6 motnhs?

The person who doctor bob was referring to did not yet test on a antibody test ( i posted the lnk below to full answer)

Question:

Hi there

i want to ask and i really need a true accurate 100% straight answer... before 26 days, an African sex worker (don't know the nationality of her) sucked my penis while i was wearing a condom ... can i get HIV from this exposure ? taking in mind every possibility ( for example, assuming that she was HIV+ or she had a wound or an open cut in her mouth or whatever ) i am really afraid because she is from Africa and the disease is widespread over there

i did a PCR test after 15 days of this action and i am still waiting for the results... how accurate is this test after 15 days?? and is it a conclusive one ??

Note: i didn't have any symptom till now (thanks God)

please i need answers i am really scared to death and can't sleep well

thanks very much for providing such a helpful space for people to ask whatever they get in mind

Question:

First of all thanks for providing response which helps a lot trust me. Q: I understand ARS symptoms are different for each individual and sometimes they do not appear. But request you yo please (if you can) provide some indication (like %age or probability) of rash which appears during seroconversion against my specific questions

1. Is it likely that the rash appears without FEVER? I read over internet that most probably rash appears after 2-3 days of Fever. What is the chances, %age, that rash can still be present without Fever.

2. Is seroconversion rash itch? I read in some articles that it will itch and some says it will not itch. Do you have any data on this.

3. Will seroconversion rash goes away after applying some cream?

4. What is the %age of detecting viral load by "RNA Quantitative Real Time PCR" after 16 days, I read your site says its 99.6 accurate after 2-3 weeks, so thought to check on %age after 2 weeks, 17th day and 21 days.

God Bless your team.

Question:

I had a sexual encounter in 05.05.2013.

I had sex with a csw and used a condom. I had to remove the first condom as I went flat after 1-1.5 minutes of sex. then again she gave me oral without a condom and again I put on a 2nd condom. we again had intercourse for about 1.-1.5 minutes then I dint feel like doing intercourse so I removed the same and finished off with her giving me oral without condom. so basically I dint come while doing intercourse and both the times that I did intercourse I had the condom on. Now when she left I went and did the water test in condom and 1 condom was absolutely fine where as the other condom I put water and there was no leak but when I pressed it a small drop did come out from near to the tip of the condom on the right side. when I pressed harder it squirted a thin line of water. so basically I repeated the test 5-6 times and every time I put water there was no leak only when I pressed a drop of water would come and when pressed harder it would squirt a thin line of water. I called the csw next day and asked to pay her to come for a test but she denied. she had already informed me that she does a test every month but then I don't know why she denied when I offered here 200$ to do the test with me for my peace of mind.

I am very upset and scared with this incident and need your professional advise as to 1. how big of a risk was I at 2. do I need testing 3. if testing is required do can I do a pcr rna test at 10 days.

4. as the oral was unprotected what all STD test do I need for the same. only she performed oral on me apart from that I only sucker her nipples and we kissed.

your kind and immediate response will be highly appreciated.

Hi .. 6 years ago i was in highly risky exposure with a house maid from Indonesia .. unprotected anal and vaginal.
I didnt have any test until last year when I started having strange symptoms
I was diagnosed with chronic Gastritis at first.
lost 10 kg of my weight and started having fevers.burning joints.and fatigue .. With constant diarrhae thats when i suspected Hiv.
So i decided to have tests .. i did combo hiv1,2 ag ab and the result was Negative
Elisa test ab Negative
Pcr hiv1 Also negative
and one more combi-duo test was Negative.
My problem is that i still have some symptoms (fatigue-joint burning-mouth burning-beard hair rash) with elevated esr and what seems to be decreasing Wbc (4.1 last time i checked.)
I really need help here .. should i continue investegating Hiv or not ?
Was my tests relible after six years of exposure?

Thanx alot.

Question:

9 weeks ago, received brief oral (fellatio); went on PEP (Combivir) for 28 days; tested at 6 weeks negative via DNA-PCR and ELISA; and 8 weeks negative via Rapid antibody. When could results be considered conclusive based on such testing? Thanks for your help.

Question:

My sincere request to please respond

1. On 3rd March 2013 my barber made a cut at back of my neck, at same time I noticed bleeding on his hand, he said same blade cut him as well. Before cut me he cut his hand.

2. I google it and found it low risk but started monitoring myself

3. Around 2 weeks 15 March- noticed small red dots on tip on my tongue and small round pimples at both my lip joints. Both still exist. I thought it is Herpes but it never converted to a pimple so far neither it hurts. After noticing this I got scared and now I am under constant depression since then.

4. After guidance from internet I did following tests

a. CD4 on 15th day Count was LOW- 380
b. RNA PCR Quantitative on 12th and 17th day- all NEGATIVE
c. Blood test ELISA "Antibody+P24 Antigen" on 14th, 28th, 35th, 40th, 54th Day -all NEGATIVE

So far I have not got any FEVER but some chills, light sore throat, light muscle pain, light joint pains, light neck stiffness but all comes and goes without FEVER.

I know conclusion will come after 13 weeks test but can someone please guide on my condition for following questions

1. RNA PCR Quantitative is not approved for diagnosis, so this test at 17 days has no significance, result was "Target not detected".

2. Can my CD4 380 be due to depression?

3. Now I have OHL like symptoms, can OHL be there without HIV, due to bad immune system?

4. Can my Antibody Creation [no Fever, no large Lymph nodes which appear when body start fight] be delayed due to my depression which suppressed my immune system due to depression

God Bless

Question:

Hi,

I had anal sex with a man of unknown HIV status (me insertive). Very unfortunately, the condom broke. I started a PEP treatment (Truvada/Kaletra) about 3 hours later and took it for 28 days. Initially, I took the pills on an empty stomach, because I was not informed that I had to take Truvada with some food in order to increase bioavailability.

I was quite confident that the treatment would prevent me from getting infected, but after nine days I developed fever, sore throat, and a scary rash on my chest, arms and armpits (maculopapular, according to my physician). Symptoms lasted for about 5 days. Approx. 2 moths after treatment I developed again a more discrete rash on my arms, lasting again for a few days.

I had negative antibody tests at 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 4 months, 8 months post exposure, as well as an undetectable HIV-1 RNA PCR at 5 months. A HCV PCR was also negative at 5 months. A CD4/CD8 count was also done. CD4: 627, CD8: 396. I found that low, but they assured me that it was in the normal range.

About 3 months pot exposure, I developed a massive fatigue, which is is still present. I had to reduce my workload by 50%, I sleep 10 hours a day and still wake up exhausted. Myalgia, puffy eyes, pale skin etc. are just some of the symptoms I am experiencing.

I am trying to find out what I am currently going through and I have developed several hypotheses. Perhaps you could tell what you think?

a) exposure to HIV and subsequent PEP treatment triggered a chronic fatigue syndrome. Would this be a possible long-term effect of PEP? Might PEP have caused a dysfunction of my immune system?

b) I got infected with another (not yet identified) virus and developed a post infectious fatigue.

c) I was infected with HIV but my body has not developed antibodies yet. The treatment protocol I received says that one should get tested at 6 months post PEP and should not donate blood for 12 months after incident. This makes me think that seroconversion can take up to 12 months.

d) The fact that initially I took Truvada on an empty stomach may have led to infection. But I started to take the pills with some food about one week after exposure. I have read reports that people who start HAART during ARS may produce antibodies very late. Does this also occur with PEP?

My physician cannot figure out what is causing my problems. He says that HIV is unlikely, given the numerous tests. I try to believe him, but this debilitating fatigue is really depressing and makes me think that something is going on inside my body.

Thank you very much for your kind help, which is very very appreciated! You are providing a great service!

Hugs,

zot
