Executive Director

Job Summary:

As the Board of Directors' official link to the Agency, the Executive Director exercises authority delegated by the Board in accordance with the Agency’s mission statement.  The Executive Director is accountable for all organizational performance with a particular emphasis on the following areas:  provides vision and leadership for the Agency and acts as the official spokesperson representing the Agency.  Oversees the functionality and management of the operational services of the Agency including: all program areas, finance, volunteers, information technology, human resources, communications, development and administration.  

Duties:

Strategic Planning and Leadership

  • Assists the Board in the formulation and diffusion of a strategic plan and provides a short and long-term vision for the Agency;
  •  Reports to the Board on overall Agency activities, programs, and services on a regular basis;
  •  Provides leadership and supportive management to the staff and volunteers of AIDS Vancouver;
  •  Leads the team in the recommendation, planning, development, implementation and evaluation of  programs and services which fulfill the mandate and mission of AIDS Vancouver;
  • Together with the Board ensures compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and contractual obligations pertaining to AIDS Vancouver;
  • Ensures compliance by the Board and staff to all Board and operational policies and procedures;
  • Identifies key issues which affect the Agency and recommends and implements strategies to manage their impact;
  • Shapes and develops departmental strategies with an organizational overview;
  • Develops, monitors, implements and evaluates policies and procedures to support Agency initiatives.

Financial Management and Philanthropy

  • In consultation with the Treasurer of the Board ensures the on-going fiscal viability of the Agency through sound fiscal management and accepted reporting methods;
  • Submits for approval annual budgets and forecasting to the Board;
  • Controls the annual operating budget for the Agency;
  • Guides the exploration and seeking of all potential sources of revenue in the public and private sectors;
  • Ensures the Agency complies with all levels of government reporting in a timely manner;
  • Anticipates favourable and/or unfavourable fiscal trends and plans accordingly;
  • Leads the development of significant donor relationships. 

Human Resources Management

  • Conducts annual performance evaluations of all reporting staff and meets quarterly to set quarterly goals consistent with the operational plan and assess previous quarter performance and provide coaching;
  • Conducts regular meetings with department heads to ensure that priorities and expectations are clear, expectations are met, coordination is optimal and everyone is working to a shared vision;
  • Demonstrates and promotes a positive and professional work environment suitable to staff, volunteers and clients in accordance with the Agency’s Team Charter;
  • Ensures compliance with all provincial and federal employment regulations and Collective Agreements;
  • Responsible for hiring, dismissal and contract negotiations of all staff.
  • Participates in all Labour Relations activities;
  • Ensures volunteerism is recognized for its vital contribution to AIDS Vancouver’s mission. 

Public Relations and Agency Representation

  • Cultivates a positive leadership role regionally and nationally within the HIV/AIDS sector;
  • Maximizes opportunities for community partnerships and networks in the design, implementation and evaluation of programs and services and the reduction of systemic barriers to service delivery;
  • Represents or delegates the representation of AIDS Vancouver in all matters of media contact;
  • Leads the Agency in all contract negotiations with government funders.

Qualifications: 

  • 5 + years experience in a senior management position for a not-for-profit organization, ideally in a unionized environment;
  • Significant professional management experience.  Ideally at least 5 years experience as a Director of Operations or Executive Director of an non profit organization with at least 20 employees;
  • University degree in a related discipline;
  • Proven financial management skills;
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Ability of lead through inspiration, manage and draw out the best in your ‘team’;
  • Credible track record working with community groups and government;
  • Extensive knowledge of HIV/AIDS related issues is desirable.
