Types of Positions

What Can You Do at AIDS Vancouver?

There are a range of positions and departments available for volunteers at AIDS Vancouver, with varying levels of client and public interaction. They also vary in their weekly schedules, from daily only to weekends and evenings.

Grocery

Availability: Monday to Thursday during the day.

Duties: The Grocery program, in operation for over 20 years, is set up like a small grocery store where we invite our clients in to have a food shopping experience, at no cost to them. The Grocery program provides enough food to our clients to fill over 16,000 bags annually and is open 2-3 weeks in the month. Volunteers assist with a wide range of activities including: receiving deliveries, preparing for & assisting with distribution, fundraising, Holiday grocery event planning and more! We have unique opportunities for every volunteer who is interested in helping and has an interest in food security, nutrition and community!

Education

Availability: Various daytime, evening and weekend shifts available.

Duties: Volunteers respond to HIV and Sexual Health related questions on our Online Helpline and via email. They also facilitate workshops in various communities and settings on the topics of HIV, Hep C, Sexual Health and Social Justice.

Community Outreach

Availability: Various daytime, evening and weekend shifts available. Must be available the first Wednesday or Thursday of every month for team meetings.

Duties: Trained volunteers work alone or in teams to provide a combination of companionship, practical assistance and personal care to persons living with HIV/AIDS in their own homes. This can include sharing a walk or a cup of tea, assisting with meal preparation, groceries, light housekeeping or laundry. Community Outreach Team volunteers can also provide accompaniment to a doctor's appointment, run an errand to the pharmacy, help a Community Outreach Team participant to pack in preparation for a move, or provide respite with child minding.

Peer Engagement

Availability: Monday to Friday, during the day.

Duties: Contribute, plan and develop promotional materials for The New Face of HIV project. Facilitate, oversee and assist in the operation of a drop in space for AIDS Vancouver clients on Grocery days.

Administrative Support

Availability: Monday to Friday, during the day.

Duties: A number of programs (Case Management, Education, Volunteer Services and Fund Development) work directly with volunteers to maintain databases, coordinate mail-outs and enter data.

BoysRUs

Availability: Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, evenings.

Duties: Assist in the delivery of a referral and outreach program that provides a safe, supportive drop-in for guys and transgender folks (participants) who work or used to work in the sex trade. Volunteers prepare food and the space prior to opening, monitor and stock food as required and interact with participants according to personal comfort levels and develop rapport for peer based support and outreach.
