Question:

Is a pain on the throat with painful white patches on the tongue and neck pain for more than two weeks a symptom of HIV infection? I was tested from 3 months and it come back negative, please help me, cheers

Answer:

Hello and thanks of using AIDS Vancouver as your source for HIV-related information.
For some people who have contracted HIV, they will show strong flu-like symptoms 2-6 weeks after infection, but not all people do and therefore symptoms are not a good way to diagnose an HIV infection. The only way to be sure is to get tested, which you did and that's great to hear. Any results obtained at or after 3 months are considered conclusive and definite, that means you don’t have to get tested again and the symptoms you're experiencing are not related to HIV. Your negative results are definitive- you are HIV negative. If your symptoms persist, it might be a good idea to go talk to your healthcare provider.
I hope this answers your questions, please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.
Take care,
Wendy
