How accurate would negative results be if PCR DNA + anti body test taken on 15th day after exposure?
Thank-you for choosing AIDS Vancouver as yoru resource for HIV and AIDS related information.
Did you have two different tests done? The PCR DNA (also called a NAAT test) is different from a 4th Generation (or "DUO") test. PCR DNA tests are 99.6% accurate 2-3 weeks post exposure. So, your test results at 15 days post possible exposure are 99.6% accurate with a PCR test.
A 4th Generation (DUO) test comprises of the 3rd generation ELISA test and the P24 antigen test. For the first part, the 3rd Generation tests only looks for HIV antibodies & 95% of infections are detectable with only an antibody test at 4-6 weeks. So in your situation it would be too soon for the antibodies to be detected by this test. However, the second part of this test, the P24 Antigen test, would be very accurate. P24 protein antigens are immediately detectable in the blood after infection and a negative result is a good indication of your status. In fact, most medical professionals agree that the DUO test is conclusive 6 weeks post exposure.
It is recommended by international testing guidelines to retest at 12 weeks (3 months) post possible exposure. At that point you can consider any test results to be definite and there will be no need for any further testing.
