Hi experts,
I had an Insti rapid test some time ago, but I noticed that on the package of the device that only indicates it is a hiv 1 antibody test. On the other hand, I read some information from Internet saying that Insti rapid test is aimed to screen both hiv1 and hiv 2 virus, but due to license issue, it's only allowed to print hiv 1 on the package before July 2011. So, Can you provide me with any insights regarding its effectiveness of hiv 2 and also hiv 1 O group testing?
Thank you very much!!
Hi there and thanks for using the AIDS Vancouver online helpline as your source of HIV/AIDS related information.
I checked the website of bioLytical (the manufacturer of the Insti HIV test) and it does indeed detect both HIV 1 and 2 types. It is true that before July 2011, the Public Health Authority of Canada had not yet approved the Insti (Rapid or Point of Care) HIV test for detection of HIV-2 but it has now been approved, although the packaging may not have indicated as such. HIV-2 infections are largely limited to West Africa and there are no known cases of HIV-2 in Canada but the tests are very accurate and able to detect HIV-2.
HIV-2 is limited mostly to west-central Africa and, outside of that region, tests may not be designed to detect that subtype. So, if you are located in west-central Africa or your exposure occurred there, you may wish to seek further consultation regarding the possible need for re-testing. If you are not in/from this region, please keep in mind that worldwide, "more than 90 percent of HIV-1 infections belong to HIV-1 group M." Moreover, even if you were exposed to a rare subtype, generic antibody testing (rapid or full blood test) are known to and considered able to detect most subtypes and more rare strains of HIV.
For more on HIV subtypes, please check out this link: http://www.avert.org/hiv-types.htm
I hope this helped to answer your question and please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any further questions.
Cheers,

Hi, Thanks for your reply!!
Hi, Thanks for your reply!!
Personally, I consider the hiv 1 infection should largely attribute to M group greater than 99% even more from various infromation on Internet. http://www.phac-aspc.gc.ca/aids-sida/publication/epi/2010/11-eng.php
Am I right? Since if not, more people will be nervous about their exposures to other groups such like "O", "M" etc.
I have called bioLytical, the technical department told me the rapid test is designed to detect "O" group.
Do you have any insights on my interpretation?
Thank you very much!!
Hi again,
While it is true that the M (Main) group is responsible for the bulk of HIV infections, distribution of virus type varies geographically. In Canada, it is true that the data suggests that all HIV infections diagnosed are attributable to various subtypes of HIV-1 group M. However, for people who are exposed in other areas, it may be necessary to consider other groups and subtypes. It is good to hear that the Insti test does cover group O infections, for everyone’s peace of mind.
Cheers,
Jonathan
