Question:

Hi Heidi,
I had a negative HIV test 17 weeks after exposure. I took the test in New-Brunswick. Do I have to take another test at 24 weeks(6 months)?
Thanks in advance for your answer.

Answer:

Hello there,
Considering that it is thought that 99% of infections will be detectable within 3 months, I would say no; generally speaking we consider 3 months (12 weeks)conclusive. You also went well and beyond 3 months.
While the brand names (so to speak) of antibody tests differ across the provinces, the window periods remain the same across the country.
The only time I would suggest waiting and testing after 6 months, is if you have high anxiety around it and you can’t function well. Otherwise, 3 months is good for testing!
Please let me know if I can provide any further information.
Wishing you good health,
Heidi
