Hi,
2 weeks ago I made the mistake of having unprotected sex. When we were having sex I was on the top, and when I finished I checked myself for blood. I just found out today that the guy I had sex with was HIV positive, but was deemed "undetectable, and cannot transmit". So I rushed over to the closest hospital and got tested.
Can someone have non transmittable HIV, and what are the chances that I may have been infected?
Hi there,
Thank you for using AIDS Vancouver as your source for HIV/AIDS information. I'm sorry to hear about your experience.
Here's a link to the transmission equation on our website (the fluids, the activity and the direct access necessary to transmit HIV):

What you should know is that blood isn't the only body fluid that contains high levels of HIV. However, if this person is in fact HIV positive and undetectable, it is possible that the person would be less likely to transmit the virus, yes.
Are you sure that this person is HIV positive? You might want to think about how this information was disclosed to you. Was it directly from the person? Or did the information come from someone that you trust?
Here's another link to information about the window period:

Although you were tested right away, it is advised that you test after 3 months to be sure because it can take up to 3 months for anti-bodies to develop.
I wish that I could give you a response that would put all your fears at ease; however it would be irresponsible to do that. Although, I do sincerely hope that it works out for you and at the end of 3 months, that you have a negative test result.
Please let us know if we can direct you to any further information.
Wishing you good health,
Heidi
