On this year’s World AIDS Day and Red Ribbon Awards we will be focusing on helping out one of our very important programs.
The Grocery program exists to support the nutritional health of our clients and to address the negative impacts of food insecurity on health outcomes in people living with HIV.
The Grocery is set up as a small store where we invite clients in to have a food shopping experience. So, we don’t just hand them a bag of food at the counter. We offer a basket and invite them into the space to collect their Groceries from the shelves. Much like the process everyone goes through at a Grocery store. Except there are no tills at the end; just friendly volunteers who help them bag their groceries. This is at no cost to our clients. During any given Grocery week we can see up to 600 people over the course of two afternoons. Our eldest client is 74 and our youngest is just 4 years old. There are 238 children who are supported through the program as well.
We believe that providing a choice ensures dignity. We provide love along with the food, which is crucial in supporting the emotional health of our clients as well. Twenty years ago we created and have maintained an environment where people feel safe to be themselves, ever since. For some of our folks, this is all they’ve ever wanted: to be accepted as they are and to belong as well. Isn’t that what we all want?
Each year we need to raise $300,000 (including in-kind donations) to ensure that we can continue to stock the shelves appropriately. The Grocery Program would greatly benefit from the following:
- Cash Donations
- Gift-in-kind donations, and/or
- Relationships with food distributors where we can purchase food items at wholesale prices
- Red Ribbon Donations scheduled for this period of time that will directly go to our Grocery Program
Now we need your help to make this extraordinary event happen and our Grocery Program supported even more. If you would like to be part of this amazing event and help support our people you are welcome to organize any other activity that is more convenient for you. Please be free to jump on board and we will do our best to support you with more ideas and through the whole process.
Please join us this year and lets acknowledge those who are always at the forefront for our communities and who contributed so much to HIV prevention and care in general.
